I'm on another community online that's devoted to cake decorating. I've noticed that when I post a picture of a "standard" type of decorated cake, even though it's impeccably done, there are no comments to the post. Deafening silence. However, when people attempt something way beyond their skill level and screw it all to hell, they get complimented even if it looks like a third grader's play-doh sculpture.
I've always believed that you run before you walk. You master the basics before attempting things that are complicated and difficult. I would rather perfect my technique on "standard" (not always easy, trust me) types of cake decorating first instead of attempting everything in existence right off the bat yet doing it all poorly. Icing a cake smoothly is actually not easy at all and takes tons of practice. Isn't it better that I perfect how to make smooth buttercream-coated cakes with even, symmetrical decorations first rather than charging blindly onwards to cover a cake in lumpy, wrinkled, uneven fondant with cutouts that are thick as coke bottle bottoms (and then declare myself so very creative)?
I've come close to just giving up on making any posts there, and only lurking there for ideas, and just posting my photos here only. I don't expect to be praised to high heaven on the community for cranking out a well executed birthday cake with standard type decorations, but neither do I expect a total silence as though my post didn't even exist. It's rare for posts on that community to get no comments. It's not like I've done anything to tick people off there. I feel like if I do a cake in my own kitchen and the people at work mistake it for one professionally made at a bakery (until I reveal otherwise), that I have accomplished something. I've never had the time or money for Wilton classes; I've 100% taught myself from books and online information.
Raaaaarrrrr!

Miranda, could it be that they are a little "clicky" and you are a newbie aka as an outsider and they will start commenting when they decide you are worthy of them? I have notice similiar patterns on other blogs.
ReplyDeleteOne would think that they would like to support and encourage anyone with a similiar interest but.... or maybe they are jealous - you never know...
praising people for doing something good is going to increase their confidence which in turn helps them reach to new levels... This is very similiar to the MK philosphy. When I have a new consultant sell her first skin care set it is a big thing - of course a seasoned consultant that is use to selling miracle sets would be going, yeah.. so what... but it is praising what that individual accomplished not a competition amongst everyone else...
I think you do a great job with cakes and there is no way in heck, something I made would ever look like your cakes.... hahahha - (not even close)
It's a huge comm and I've been there for...5 years I guess? I don't know...I guess they just like what's trendy or whatever. Standard birthday decorations aren't super trendy. *sigh* Cakes that look like designer purses are, but you know...I can't do that!
ReplyDeleteBet you could...
ReplyDeletelol it would look like a designer purse that someone ran over with their car!!! :P
